A cheesy, corny, random slice of life "sitcom" that follows the intertwined lives of my Our Life MCs—a group of chaotic 20-somethings bridging Oregon and California together through the power of friendship.
And a messy Discord server.
Yes, they have lives that extend far far far outside of their romantic partners, they're normal and (semi) well-adjusted people :)
Here's everything you need to know about everybody and everything in as few words as I can muster (it's still a lot lol):
Places that'll be referenced or the setting of my lil blurbs more often than anywhere else
Sunset Bird, California - a tiny beach town where one of the most important found family of this generation lives right across from each other.
Prism Vista, California - the closest city in the metropolitan area
Orange, California - never too far from family, it's an hour away from Sunset Bird
Los Angeles, California - also within an hour from SB
Huntington Beach, California - you know.
Golden Grove, Oregon - a small, cozy little town - not nearly as small as Sunset Bird
The Gay Brunch Gang
Iris Holden (née Rowe) - Iris (she/her) grows up in Sunset Bird, across the street from the Holdens. Nobody is surprised when she and Cove Holden end up mawwied. The two move to Orange to establish a bit of independence from their loving families, but they made sure to never be
too far away. Iris runs an online alt fashion boutique and paints weddings. She's also maintained contact with a childhood penpal from a certain Oregon town.
Mahari Wilder - Mahari (they/she) grows up in Prism Vista with their grandparents, in the same apartment complex as Derek Suarez. They meet Iris and Cove through the boys' dads' business partnership. Mahari and Cove become a surprisingly solid platonic pair, while Derek has the express honor of being Mahari's boyfrand~ (it's her honor, too, tbh.) They live together in Orange, as well! This happened some time after their besties moved, but it was the
best decision for Mahari and Derek who were both pretty listeless in life for a while. Mahari is in their first year of uni—going for a space engineering degree!
Jorja Williams - Believe it or not, Jorja (she/her) grows up in Sunset Bird, too. She was painfully shy and anxious kid and never went anywhere without her parents, so she missed out on some pretty sweet childhood friendships. That's okay, though! She eventually joins the gang during the first summer, post-high school. Jorja is dating Baxter, but she's not quiiite ready to move in with him yet. (Baby steps, y'know?) Instead, she lives in LA with a couple of friends, squeezing in time to alternate visits between her busy work as a boudoir photographer and vintage fashion model.
Hero Fujii - Hiroshi (he/him) is the most random piece in this puzzle. He doesn't grow up in Sunset Bird, or Golden Grove. Instead, he grows up in Huntington Beach with a massive family and a trail of admirers (he
was the high school swim team's ace four years in a row, after all). He meets the SB gang during one summer in middle school, during a personal mission with his uncle to surf every beach in California. They rent a beach house off on another street, but end up running into fellow fishes Cove and Mahari quite often. The rest, as they say, is herstory... Today, Hero's still tearing up waves in Huntington, while working as an elementary school special needs TA during the week and a personal trainer on weekends.
Prisha Ramesh - Prisha (she/her) originally hails from Seattle, but her mom got a job in Golden Grove when she was 10. This massively sucked for the kid who always had a hard time making friends. Luckily, though, she happened to move in between two incredibly social kids her same age. And, within a few months, a particularly incessant kid moves in up the road. Friends galore for the girl with a resting sad face! Prisha goes on to date "boys" club's charistmatic leader, Qiu, when they're older—I'm leaving further details vague because we have yet to truly play the GoGro kids' stories, but Prisha ends up living in LA—the best (and closest) place for her theater and classical dance ventures. She's closer to auditions and her troupe that way, even if she has to do vocal coaching gigs to pay her way. Sometimes, she and Finn perform as a silly little egg punk band with their friend Jonesy—it's called Doug Lillard.
Angel Torres - Angel (she/her) grows up in the richer neighborhood of Golden Grove with her two dads. She hails from New Mexico, having landed in Golden Grove during the summer after 8th grade...a
really weird time for a kid that was socially a boy for their entire life up until then. She eventually comes to terms with her gender and her pronouns; especially with the help of the friends she fell into at the start of high school. Once that was all figured out, things only started going up! Eventually, she charmed her way into the local sparkly haired musician, Tamarack's heart
and crushed a bachelor's of science degree in two and a half years (thanks dual enrollment and AP~). Now, she's a biology grad student and TA. She also DJs sometimes, but that's just for fun.
Mindeulle Lee - Mindy (she/her), Dandy, or Mindoo—whatever you wanna call her—is Golden Grove's brightest comet and she collided with the sleepy town literally two days before her first year of high school. She wasn't particularly enthused about leaving her friends in Toronto for some boring old town, but she'd make it work. And making it work meant being popular! Easy work for the shining socialite, but she found true friends in the ???boys??? club. She was never much of an academic, so it was straight into a trade right out of high school (and after a gap year living back in Seoul, of course.) Mindy works in Golden Grove as a maximalist nail tech, taking up residence with another friend who recruited her to their shop, but her
dream is to sell her custom character-inspired hanbok full time. She frequently travels between her three homes, but always makes time to send the gang rambly meltdowns about idol #34872.
Finn Parr - Finnigan (he/him) moved from St. Simons Island, Georgia with his ma and step dad around the same year as Prisha. It's laughably easy for him to make friends, so he joins the not-boys club and decides within seconds that the little girl that seemed to shrink around even her friends would be
his responsibility. He grows up on a road a little walk away from the cul de sac, anyway. He still lives there, honestly. Total momma's boy and he could never just
leave her, even if she
does have her husband to hang out with. He's just not as cool :/ Finn is the reason the other GoGros are even friends, which I'll get to soon because you need to know that Finnigan is the unemployed friend on a Tuesday. He only does gig work and it is
only to help pay the family phone bill, buy groceries, and fund his Renn Faire and Scare Farm seasons. He's an actor in both—those are his passions, along with being Doug Lillard's drummer, of course.
Iris, Finnigan, and...Baxter??: The Glues That Bind (how the Cali and Oregon kids connect)
Pre-Golden Grove, Prisha's mom decided that maybe getting her shy daughter a friend she could talk to without the pressure of face-to-face was a good idea. That friend ended up being a slightly older, incredibly sweet girl named Iris.
Because he simply absorbs friends, Finnigan once again absorbs kids that stick out like a sore thumb into his gang. He approaches Angel and Mindy during art class where the 3 of them were the only 9th graders. Aaand the rest is herstory.
Iris was the first one to start the Discord server with the spread-out Sunset Birdies and then urging Prisha to tell
her friends about it, so they could all chat sometimes. She reluctantly agreed, merely sending the invite to Finnigan so it'd spread like a disease without her having to do any of the work. This quickly devolved into a chaotic mess that's active through all hours of the day because a certain nail tech, space dork, and clown boy keep up at ungodly hours.
Imagine everyone's surprise when Jorja's Baxter was the cool kid the nega-boys club grew up with! Small world! But, anwyway, they all hang out and/or chat in their own branched off groupings that have naturally formed due to shared interests. And, as a whole, have a newly-established tradition to get brunch in a chosen home-city once every couple of months without their partners. It's basically a "girls" club :3
